Audrey Hepburn: Portraits Of An Icon

There are few women in the history of the silver screen that are more iconic than Audrey Hepburn. With her perfect poise and signature style, Hepburn was one of the world’s most recognisable women, whose style and grace is still emulated today. Always on the hunt for style and photography inspiration, I took a visit to the National Portrait Gallery’s latest exhibition capturing the life of the star.

Coast trip to Audrey Hepburn Exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery

Audrey Hepburn: Portraits Of An Icon is a beautifully extensive exhibition illustrating the life of style icon and silver screen royalty Audrey Hepburn, featuring over seventy images from leading twentieth-century photographers such as Richard Avedon, Terry O’Neill and Cecil Beaton.

Beginning in her early years, we walked through Hepburn’s time as a London chorus girl and eager early-day actress right through to her glittering film career. Old Hollywood classics spanned every wall, with favourites such as ‘Breakfast At Tiffany’s’, ‘Roman Holiday’ and ‘Funny Face’ coming to life in photographs, illustrations and movie posters. Audrey herself was seen at all angles of her character, from her presence in her most recognisable roles to her dedication to UNICEF in the final years of her life. Entry to exit, we followed the journey and undeniable beauty of her career.

Not only did the exhibition explore her working credits but also illustrated her impact as a style icon throughout the 50s and 60s. Hepburn’s famous red carpet attire is exactly what you would expect from Hollywood royalty, but peering through the archives of her style file, we discovered that her casual dress – classically comprised of cigarette trousers, ballet pumps, crisp shirts and simple knits, was what really reflected the personality of Audrey. We spent hours sketching the most coveted outfits from her life, which are sure to become design inspiration for Coast’s upcoming seasons!

The exhibition gave the unique opportunity to take a closer, more initiate look into the life of Audrey Hepburn. Each photograph told the story of her talent, poise, grace and kindness. Her style was flawless and her films are iconic, but it is Hepburn herself who stayed with me hours after leaving. Whether you’re an avid fan or a newcomer to the biographer of the star, this exhibition is sure to leave you in love with this classic icon.
