5 Minutes with… Head of Design Kim Elliott

We spent 5 minutes with our Head of Design, Kim Elliott, to give you the inside scoop on what’s in store for autumn and the key pieces you should keep your eyes out for…

What can we expect to see this season?

Coast is delivering more of the key season’s trends in our unique style and handwriting. We have really challenged ourselves to push the boundaries and this always starts with fabric. You will notice quite a tactile collection where we have sourced beautiful luxe fabrics and designed more in-house jacquards and prints – which makes it unique and exclusive. Hopefully we have offered a few little surprises and a bit of fun too.

Where did you get your inspiration?

I am inspired by everything. Literally everything – from what girls are wearing in the street to celeb style spotting. I am constantly researching which is what you expect as part of my role however it is now totally the norm for all women – with the ease of social media everyone is researching all the time even if they don’t realise it.

I am also constantly shopping and I am very lucky to also travel the world in search of the next best thing!

Tell us a little bit more about the print process.

A bit of drama and standout is absolutely part of our Coast DNA. This visual is usually either a printed pattern or a woven jacquard. The more we want to offer exclusivity to the customer and something she will not find anywhere else the more we have found the need to create our own artworks. So we have expanded our design team and are very lucky to work with super creative print designers who hand paint beautiful artworks. The designers create and paint in our head office studios.

What’s your favourite item of clothing?

A big skirt! I am very happy that the volume trend is continuing and I am always relieved when I see it still on the catwalks. I love the drama and the femininity of this silhouette. What makes it new this season is the A-line shaping, newer pleating details into the waist, new clever cutting and fabric folding. What is also interesting is watching the trend move into volume in sleeves, volume in ruffles and volume in fabric folding, so it is not just about volume in hemlines this season.

Personally I love the animal print skirt and it is a key piece I cannot wait to buy. Combining the volume silhouette with the animal pattern makes it totally unique to Coast.

What’s your must-have fashion piece for autumn?

Oh that is so mean to limit me to one piece! I love a few key pieces that every woman needs in her wardrobe this season – and it’s all about layering to create the ultimate outfit or total look. The roll neck sweater, the shirt, the longer line tunic, a wide leg trouser-cropped or full length, the wrap sleeveless coat, the long wrap coat over dress combo – all of these come together to create our beautiful collection. Sorry is that too much!? There is too much to choose from!
